Help - AP Studio Art concentration

I'm in AP art, and the time has come to choose a concentration for the rest of the year. I wanted to do portraits of close friends and family, but my art teacher said that was too general. I definitely want to do something including portraits, but I'm not sure what. I can't think of any good ideas.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

Drawing hair

Does anyone have any tips for drawing hair? I'm drawing a self portrait right now for school and I've finished my face, but now I'm struggling with the hair. I just can't get it to look realistic. I have blonde hair, so it's not as easy as drawing dark hair. Any tips would be appreciated.

Question to all portrait artists

When drawing a portrait, how do you get the proportions accurate? I just use a scap piece of paper and mark it, which is really inefficient... Do you use rulers? Or are some people just really good at looking at a picture and drawing it perfectly? Because I know I can't do that. My portraits used to be all lopsided and awkward.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
